Comfrey Plant Food

Comfrey Plant

As many of you know I Iove to recycle as much as I can and always like to share great ideas in the garden.  This week we will be sharing a gardening tip sent into us by Jayne –  how to make up your own plant food out of comfrey. Not only does this plant look pretty it can also help out it’s fellow plants around the garden…

Comfrey can be made up into a nutrient-rich food which can be applied as a liquid soil drench or as a foliar spray – foliar feeding is a technique of feeding plants by applying liquid fertiliser directly to their leaves. Plants are able to absorb essential elements through their leaves. The nitrogen content in the comfrey fertilizer helps with green leafy growth. The phosphorus helps the plants remain vigorous and fight off disease and pest damage. Potassium is instrumental in flower and fruit production.

So how do we make comfrey fertiliser:

Soak the leaves in a bucket of water,( as many as the bucket will hold) and put a lid on then soak for about 2-3  weeks. Take the lid off and you’ll find the contents of the bucket should now be dark brown & very smelly.  Strain the liquid off and bottle it (you can recycle your old water bottles). The suggested quantities to use is 1 part liquid to 10 parts water, so in a normal size watering can use half a litre to a full watering can.

That’s me signing off for today… I’m off to get started on making some comfrey fertiliser 🙂

If any of you would like some comfrey we have plenty around the garden here at Jardin de la Maison Rose.

A huge thank you to Jayne for taking the time out to write/sharing this gardening tip with us.

Happy gardening everyone…
